Second weekend in June sure to be a crowd pleaser

Published: 05.26.2016

Can anyone guess what happens the second weekend in June every year? Here’s a hint: it has happened for 26 years! Figured it out? Hum, well let’s see. There are no tickets to buy to attend. There is great music… Okay, by now, we hope you’ve figured it out! The Alexander City Jazz Fest happens the second weekend in June every year, and this year is no exception!

This year the Jazz Fest Committee has put together a great line up of entertainers – you certainly don’t want to miss a single note.

On Friday June 10, at 6pm, we’ll gather in Strand Park, downtown Alexander City for night one. The theme this year, for those sponsors wanting to decorate a table is…. well, “It’s Your Theme, Do What You Want To Do!” In other words, have fun and be creative! There will be cash prizes for Best Table Decoration and Best Food Presentation!

Opening the show is our own Jonathan Bloom and his band! Following Jonathan is Roman Street. Roman Street is a couple of brothers and their band from Mobile. This brotherly jam session has developed into a Billboard/iTunes-charting band who many have dubbed “the next generation” of Jazz Fusion. Friday closes with headliner Tab Benoit. Benoit is a GRAMMY®-nominated songwriter, guitarist and singer with a repertoire that ranges from swamp-pop classics to gritty blues and rootsy jams from New Orleans, Louisiana!

Then, on Saturday, we load up and head to The AMP on Lake Martin for our Gulf Coast night! At 6:30, things will get started with the funk and soul sounds of New Orleans’ Gravy, and at 8pm, The Brass-A-Holics, also from New Orleans. These eight guys bring a distinctive blend of New Orleans’ signature brass band jazz and Washington D.C.’s percussion-based Go-Go. We guarantee they will have you dancing. At 9:30, evening headliner Wet Willie will take the stage. From Mobile, these guys play an intense, very vocal-oriented brand of southern soul. WOW, what a night!

It’s going to be a great weekend for music. Join us June 10 and 11 for the Alexander City Jazz Fest. The whole weekend will make you “keep on smiling!”
