Drink This Now: Campari Sun

Published: 08.26.2015

SpringHouse’s resident mixologist Will Abner has done it again! This time around, he’s created a homemade version of the shandy or radler, a tasty, thirst-quenching beer whose roots date back to Western Europe in the early 1920s. Radlers or shandies are pilsner-style beers combined with lemonade. Present-day shandies use grapefruit juice nearly as often as lemonade.

Will Abner’s rendition brings together the easy-drinking (and affordable) Miller High Life with fresh-squeezed grapefruit juice and the deep, bitter orange flavor of Campari, the iconic Italian aperitif.

We’ll let you mix a batch and decide…the Campari Sun may just be the new Russell Lands On Lake Martin Labor Day Drink of Choice.

The Campari Sun

Ingredients:
1 bottle of Miller High Life
.5 oz Campari
About 1.5 oz fresh grapefruit juice

How to prepare:
Open a bottle of beer, and drink enough so that the neck of the bottle is empty – making room for the other ingredients. Add the Campari; then fill to the top with fresh grapefruit juice. Never fear if the mixture bubbles up. After all, this is a cocktail designed for swimwear and outdoor adventures. Cheers!
